What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
21 August 20265 min read
GEO improves the authority and clarity signals that generative search uses when choosing sources to cite.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring authority, content and digital signals so generative AI search experiences surface and cite your brand as a source.
What changed
Generative search across Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT does not return ten blue links. It synthesises an answer and names its sources. Being one of those sources is the new equivalent of ranking on page one.
The engine decides what to cite based on authority, clarity and how extractable your content is. You don't optimise for a position, you optimise to be chosen as a reference.
How GEO differs from SEO
The fundamentals overlap. Technical health, authority and clear content still matter. GEO adds a focus on citation signals: structured, unambiguous content that a model can extract and attribute, and a consistent presence across the web that establishes you as the source on a topic.
What actually moves it
Authority first. A generative engine cites sources it trusts, and trust is built the same way it always was: through expertise, consistency and references from other sources.
Clarity second. Content that answers a specific question in an extractable form outperforms content that hints at one.
Measurement third. Generative results shift frequently, so the useful metric is citation presence over time, not any single snapshot.
What GEO is not
It is not a replacement for SEO, and it is not a guarantee of placement because no one controls what a generative engine surfaces. It is the structural work that makes being cited more likely, made measurable.
